BLACK LIVES MATTER | NEW YORK CITY

Summer, 2020 - The Associated Press

“I CAN’T BREATHE!”

- Eric Garner, Staten Island, N.Y., July 17, 2014

- George Floyd, Minneapolis, Minn., May 25, 2020

The streets of New York City are home to the painful, solemn ritual of protest. In the summer of 2020, in the wake of yet another spate of killings of Black Americans at the hands of police officers nationwide, New York’s streets shook with rage once more. It’s another chapter in the seemingly endless cry for an end to a criminal justice system that assigns arbitrary value to human life.

Terrence Floyd, the brother of George Floyd, pauses and looks to the sky as he speaks to a crowd of thousands demonstrating racial injustice in policing.
